How do you remove the dust cap from the drum on a 2007 Ford Focus without damaging it?

There is usually a lip that you can use to pry off the dust cap when you go to change the rear brakes but there isn't one on the Focus. Is there a trick to it?How do you remove the dust cap from the drum on a 2007 Ford Focus without damaging it?DO NOT attempt to remove the drum by hitting it with a hammer!!! It is not a %26quot;knock off%26quot; style like they are on most other vehicles. The drum on this particular car is one piece with the rear wheel bearing. The dust cap is NOT reusable once removed. You are correct in that there is no way to remove it, without damaging it. For this reason, those dust caps are readily available at any Ford dealer parts departments. On this particular car, there are TWO ways to remove the drum. One is to remove the dust cap you mentioned, and then the 30mm axle nut behind it. Or, you can remove the drum and spindle as an assembly by removing the four 13mm bolts on the BACK side of the backing plate. Doing it this way requires removing the ABS wheel speed sensor (if equipped) either attached to the spindle with the connector disconnected just ahead of the rear wheel, or removing it from the spindle with the one 8mm bolt securing it, if it will come out easily. BTW what is the mileage on this car? It should not be needing brakes on the rear. Rear brake shoes on these particular cars usually have a long lifespan. If you do end up removing it by the first method, just remember that the 30mm axle nut has to be torqued to 174 ft.-lbs. upon reinstallation. Hope this helps. How do you remove the dust cap from the drum on a 2007 Ford Focus without damaging it?You're Welcome.

How do you remove the dust cap from the drum on a 2007 Ford Focus without damaging it?try a big channel-lock pliers. grab it and wiggle it back and forth while pulling. you might have a couple marks on the cap when done, but it won't be dented and out of roundHow do you remove the dust cap from the drum on a 2007 Ford Focus without damaging it?No removal at all, when you take your tire off, you have to bang like hell to take off the drum. Thats all! Tire, then take off drum. Took me about a 1/2 hour to take one of my drums off my car, the other side just slid off.

How can I fix the brakes on my car.?

I cannot get the brakes to work on my daily driven car.

1988 Toyota Camry no abs rear drums

Symptom: brake pedal goes to the floor, no pressure in front left wheel and rear right wheel. This all happened after I REBUILT my 2 front calipers and tried to bleed the system.

- I changed the master cylinder (twice because the first I thought was a defective rebuild) I adjusted the push rod on the booster. I adjusted the brake pedal. Didn't work

FWD cars are split systems, front right wheel works with rear left wheel, front left wheel works with rear right wheel. diagonally.

- So, I changed my proportioning valve, and the little splitter block next to the master. didnt work

- Then I thought maybe the caliper rebuild kits were poor quality so I bought 2 new calipers. didn't work

- I replaced a wheel cylinder I found had a seized piston. didn't work

I've tried bleeding the car starting with the furthest wheel from the master to the closest, I tried cross bleeding it (because its a split system). I've put almost 2 liters of brake fluid through the system in attempts to get it to work. Ive tried just about everything...nothing works

Whats the next step, what am I missing.

Garage is not an option I've changed every piece that could have been faulty.

thank youHow can I fix the brakes on my car.?Are you getting a good brake effort from OSF and NSR brakes? Have you visually checked / watched the fluid come out from both outlets on the master cylinder? Definatly sounds like a master cylinder problem to me.

Does fluid squirt nicely out of the nipples on the brakes that are not working or are you getting very little fluid through? How can I fix the brakes on my car.?I assume that after you reattached all the brake components and bled the brakes that you pumped the brake pedal until the pedal became hard?

This needs to be done to take up the slack between brake pads/shoes and discs/drums and between the pistons/calipers and the brake pads. How can I fix the brakes on my car.?Did you check the brake lines? How can I fix the brakes on my car.?a way to check this out is to make sure all llines are closed, next have someone inside the car to do the pedal pushing. first is open the line at the master by unscrewing the threaded nut, with the line open have the person inside push down and hold the brake pedal till you can close the line, after closing the line then the pedal can be released.

repeat this about 8 to 10 times, by the end you should have fluid coming out of the line at the master. do this to both lines.

You are not pumping at any time

pumping will just agitate the air in the system.

If by the 10th time you are not getting a solid stream of fluid from the master cylinder line then there is a problem with the master.

Next move down the line to the block and repeat the same steps,

see if you can get fluid out of the other side of the block if you do then repeat this step to each of the wheels.

After you get solid fluid to each of the wheel then and only then can you proceed to perform the pumping type of bleeding.

Can anyone direct me to a web page that will give me a step by step on how to change the rear brake shoes on a Mk 3 Ibiza.

Dont get me wrong I am competant enough to do them, I would just like a little look at what I can expect when I get the drum off and any tips from experts. Just to prepare myself a bit.

Ta for any postitive helpful repliesSEAT Ibiza back brakes?Rear Drum Brakes:

Break loose the wheel lugs on both sides, jack up each side and support the vehicle using metal jack stands. Remove the wheels. Most rear drums simply slide on to the hub, although they may have a thin metal push nut on two of the lugs to secure the drum during assembly, if they are found simply break them off using a pair of diagonal cutting pliers or a cold chisel, You do not need to replace the push nuts - they simply prevent the drum from falling off during handling during vehicle assembly. Wearing safety glasses to protect yourself from flying pieces of rust, pound liberally around the rim of the drum with a heavy hand sledge (2# or 1 Kg size) rotating the blows, do not hit the same place repeatedly, until the drum breaks loose. IF the drum is not too badly grooved, the drum will slide off with a bit of wiggling, if it refuses to come off you will have to locate the adjuster access hole in the backing plate, usually oval shaped and located at either the bottom center or upper front center of the backing plate, remove the rubber plug and turn the adjuster wheel until the brake shoes back off and allow the drum to be removed. In extreme cases it may be necessary to force the drum off with extreme brute force using 2 or more Large Pry Bars - if this degree of force is required be prepared to replace absolutely everything in the assembly - Adjuster mechanisms, Hold down pins springs and clips, return springs and last but certainly not least the parking brake cables. If the drums are only mildly grooved, and are similar in appearance on both sides it should not be necessary to have them turned or to replace them, if either side has deep grooves, or if the lip on the outer edge where the shoe does not contact the drum is deeper than 3/16%26quot; (2mm) then the best solution is simply to replace the drums, if new drums are installed make certain to clean the braking surface using Brake Parts Cleaner to remove the oily preservative. Hopefully at least one side came apart without requiring the brute force method !!! Replace the brake assembly one side at a time closely and carefully comparing the positioning and orientation of each part with it's mate on the other side to ensure correct operation of the completed assembly. If re using the adjuster assembly, thoroughly clean it of rust and coat the threads with Anti-Seize compound and operate the threaded adjustment from end to end several times to ensure smooth operation. Also apply a dab of Anti-Seize to each of the spots where the shoes ride on the backing plate. If you are replacing the adjuster make certain that you install each adjuster on the correct side, one of them will be Left hand or Reverse threaded due to the mirror image operation of the design. When the side is assembled slide the drum over the shoes and check for excessive clearance, if there is more than 1/16%26quot; (1mm) clearance, rotate the adjuster wheel a little at a time until the drum just lightly drags on the shoes as they slide on. Repeat process for opposite side. Install wheels and snug the lugs using a crisscross or star pattern, lower the car to the ground on both sides and tighten the wheels to the proper torque using a torque wrench, again using a crisscross or star tightening pattern which prevents warping of the hub and wheel assembly. Test the brakes and verify that you have a firm pedal with the engine running before placing the car in gear! If the pedal is firm put the car in gear and let it roll a few feet and check the brakes again, if they feel normal continue with a test drive trying out the brakes at varied speeds, they should be smooth and free from any pulling from side to side.SEAT Ibiza back brakes?the main thing alot forget is u need a grinder...on removing the drums, check the inner braking surface, there will be a lip of unworn metal that needs ground off..this aids quick and proper fitment of the drum.also adjust up the shoes by hand[dont let the ''automatic'' adjusters work as most of the time they dont]...so there just dragging the drum when its on..if when back together, you Spin the wheel, and it turns freely, without slowing down quick then you've done it wrong!...shoes must be just touching the drum,if there not there will be lots of movement on the foot brake...hope this helps a LittleSEAT Ibiza back brakes?well you can always google it, normally brings up what your looking for, I would invest in a haynes manual for your car , i buy one for evry car i get and they cover evrything

1972 chevy truck k20 brakes and exhaust.?

i have a 1972 chevy truck k20. with power disc/drum brakes. disc front drum back. someone cut my rear brake lines and put water in my brake resevoir. now theres air in all my lines and stuff. how can i get all the air out. i plugged the back brake line and am now bleeding them from the rear. is there any possibilty to getting all the air out or what. how can i go about doing this the best way. and also is it true what i hear about a sbc engine needing backpressure. then how can hot rods and or rat rods run straight headers. is there anything i can do to my carburetor to gain more hp when i run straight header. like change the jetting or something. please all your information is greatly appreciated and needed. engine is a 02 chevy crate engine with a cam and edelbrock 650 cfm carb and edelbrock performer intake manifold. hei ignition by ac delco. and champion spark plugs. and serpentine belt kit. 4 core radiator. o and the truck has no fan and runs 160 degrees all the time.1972 chevy truck k20 brakes and exhaust.?I hate to say this but you should have it towed somewhere with a pressure bleeder. I say this for 2 reasons. Reason 1 these are your brakes were talking about its the only way to stop your truck so I believe that since you have never done it before you should have a professional do it. And reason 2 every good tech knows that brake fluid absorbs water so if someone put it in your brake system then that's why you should get it pressure bled so they can flush out all the water. Make sure you tell them that there is water in the system and that it needs flushed extra good. This may not be what you wanna hear but its a professionals opinion.

Brake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?

I have a red brake light on i just had my rear brakes changed but the light is still on what makes that light go on? i cant seem to find anything around the drum or brake shoes wear would the sensor be or what would set it off how can i fix this?Brake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?sensor is usually on the master cylinder and is telling you you have low fluid check thatBrake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?An '83 Ram PU isn't going to have a low fluid level warning light. That's just the normal brake warning light, which is triggered by a sensor in your proportioning valve (a little metal block that the 2 lines from the master go into, and then 3-4 lines come out to the wheels, just below the master). It shows that there is some sort of an imbalance in pressure between the 2 brake circuits. A lot of times it will be on after a brake job because the wheel cylinders got pushed back in to make room for the new shoes. It will usually go out after you press the brake pedal a few times. If not, it could be that the proportioning valve needs to be reset, or the wheel cylinders started leaking when they were pushed in. Normally, it will come on if you have a fluid leak, air in the lines, or a bad master cylinder plunger.

Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?

    1) My mechanic said my front brake pads are worn and need to be replaced soon. I think he said they were down to 1/32%26quot;. The quote for this job was about $180 ($50 for parts, the rest for labor). But I haven't heard any sounds from my brakes - do all cars have that %26quot;indicator%26quot; sound, or may my car not?

    2) My brakes also vibrate a bit (pedal) when at higher speeds. He said this is caused by the rear drum brakes being out of line or uneven or something - He can machine/adjust those for about $90. Is that necessary and/or reasonable?

    3) About how often would I need to change my brake pads?

I have a 99 Mazda protege and live in Denver CO , and drive about the avg amount i'd say.

ThanksDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?Mazda's have a reputation for squeaking brakes but that can also be a sign that they are going bad and need to be replaced. Get them checked before you ruin the rotor. That's expensive to replace.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?well i think you think you should get it checked out. i don't think its that big of a deal cause all cars squeak on occashionsDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? From what I've learned yesDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?yesDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? My uncle is a service manager at a high end dealer and he says that not all breaks squeak when they need replacing. If you are doubting what they told you go and get another estimate elsewhere. And yes removal of the vibration is necessary... Brakes are pretty important to me when I am flying down the road, I really don't want to take any chances of them failing... that has happened to me once and it wasn't a nice feeling.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?Brake pads need to be checked on a yearly basis. What you mechanic said is true. Even if you don't hear a sound from your brakes doesn't mean they don't need to be replaced. When you start hearing a sound it could be too late.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? They should. Honda has tabs built in so when you hear the squealing, you are not actually wearing out your brakes, you are just being warned before they becomes unsafe.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? Not all make the sound. Some brake pads have a built-in %26quot;indicator%26quot; - a piece of metal that scrapes to make a noise when your pads are worn too thin. Some don't.

1/32%26quot; is VERY thin - replace them right away.

The vibration is more likely your front discs being warped. If they will machine both the front rotors (discs) and the rear drums for $90, that's not too bad. For just the rear drums it may be a little high.

Brake pads (front wear much more) should last at least 20,000 miles, and perhaps as much as 60,000. Rear brakes will probably go 80,000.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?advise you to check some more prices. on the expensive side. vibration at different speeds can be due to warpage in the front rotors. they can be machined. can't give you an honest answer on how long since everyone drives differently. they, the brakes--especially disc--, should have a metal squeeker or squealer to let you know. 1/32 is extremely bad and needs to be fixed. on driving an average, does not indicate how you or others drag on the the brakes...amount of time and pressure on the pedal. hope this helps.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?50 dollars for parts on a 99 Protege, the same car my wife drives, is way too much. I would take it someone else and get a 2nd opinion.

The squealing sound doesn't always mean that your brakepads are wearing down. That sound can come from brake dust, heat, or even rust on the rotor. In many cases when the pad wears down to the point where it's just metal on metal contact you'll get a squealing sound, but not if there's any pad left.

After working for some time with mechanics, I can very safely tell you that there are a good 80% who are trying to rip you off. Take your car somewhere else and get the job done there.

If you're getting any kind of backfeed or pressure returned to your petal when braking you will need to get your drums adjusted. 80-90 is a fair price for that.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced? Most cars have wear indicators, but some brake pad manufacturers dont put them on their pads and sometimes they break off. So, sometimes they dont squeal. $180.00 is a fair price. Vibration can be caused by drums and rotors being out of round. The test is while driving around 50, LIGHTLY apply the parking break. If the car vibrates then yes the problem is the rear brakes. Drums can be machined to repair this condition. Rotors should be replaced tho. Autozone sells inexpensive rotors and they work well. Brake pads generally need to be replaced about 40,000 miles, depending on driving habits.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?mst cars have what the call a scrapper when your pads get low it rides on the disk , the front. making a noise so you can get er done. go for the front pads first, see how it goes if the pulsation persists then go for the rear. front pads average 40 to 60 thousand rear shoes about 80 depending of course how and the condition that you driveDo all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?they do if they have a squeeler on them, but sometimes thats not the case, you might have brake dust, that will make them squeel too.Do all cars make that squealing braking sound when they need to be replaced?some cars do have low pad indicators some dont if ur down to 1/32 its time and for ur high speed brakeing vibratios it is either ur rotors or drums out of round or rotors warped change them not that expensive

  • Corolla spongy brakes?

i just changed the front disc brake pads and rotors on my 2000 corolla and the mechanic said the rear drums still have 45% left on them so i didn't have the rear changed. I'm not exactly sure if this problem was present before the brake change or not but i noticed that my brake is really spongy and i have to press it about 90% down to get a good brake response and after 90% it is really stiff and makes it hard for me to judge how hard i am braking before locking the wheels. This is important cause my car lacks ABS. I have heard that changing the brake fluid and bleeding the lines helps my brakes be more sharper and less spongy but my receipt from the brake job indicates that they did change the brake fluid and did bleed the lines!? so im wondering whether i should take it to toyota instead and ask them to bleed the line and change the brake fluid or just to ask them to inspect the brakes? i know there is a 80$ diagnostic charge if no problem is found and im wondering whether i should risk it?Corolla spongy brakes?just drive it it will get betterCorolla spongy brakes?whoever changed your brake pads and rotors must have not followed the proper procedure to bleed brakes. OR did it half assed. i suggest taking it back to them, and telling them politely to do it again, or have a technician try and press the brakes and see what he thinks about it. if its obvious to you , it should be obvious to him. if u took it to a good shop, theyll re do it for you at no cost.Corolla spongy brakes?you may have air in your brakes system, noot a big deal just bleed the brakes, did you remove a caliper when you did the change,it could also just e the brakes you got,did you go cheap?cause you get what you pay for,

How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?

I have a honda civic 05ex coupe and I want to convert 4 lugs pattern to 5 lugs pattern. I don't know what parts should i get to do it, and I also want to change the front rotor brakes and rear brake ( my rear brakes are drum and I want to convert it into brake rotor). Can you guys help me out with this?

thankzHow to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?#1 get a wheelbarrow full of money! #2 If you are lucky you might find a Honda with 5 lug wheels, - you then might be able to pull hubs off and change out with stock parts! Or you might be able to buy adapters at auto parts store (or custom wheel shop)! This will cost you plenty! For non drive wheels you can change hubs, -- but you need to find one at junkyard (preferably) that has disc brakes on back and buy all the stuff needed to remove drum brakes and backing plates and install lines that go with disc brakes! Then you have problem of parking brake, which has to have all the conversion stuff to to work!

When you get finished with that, all you have to do is get master cylinder for disc brakes, (for all 4 wheels), change anti skid brake parts (if so equipped) and possibly %26quot;shuttle valve that shuts off fluid flow should one %26quot;end %26quot; of car have brake leak, and then I guess you are ready to go!

Possibly you can buy conversion kit for disc brakes at a%26quot;speed shop/custom car supply%26quot; place for somewhere around $900-1000! They also might have adapters to bolt on. but this will make your wheels sit out about 1 1/2%26quot; probably - so you might need %26quot;deep dish%26quot; wheels to go that way!

To me it would be unwarranted expense, as only about 1/3 of braking goes to rear wheels! And if you are going to %26quot;play competition%26quot; you will probably tear car up and ruin it in short order anyway!

But then what do I know!! I have only been fixing cars since I was 9,---which is almost 60 years ago!How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe? The lugs are part of the %26quot;brake-rotor%26quot;How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe? The lugs are mounted in the hub assembly of each wheel, the key is finding 5 lug hubs which have the same size bearing mounting shaft as the 4 lug hubs which you have. once you locate a set of the proper hubs you will have to obtain rotors to match, Brake caliper mounts to match the rotors (front and rear) which may require replacement of the knuckles in the front and will certainly require modifications to the rear spindle supports to mount the rear calipers. This is not going to be a simple swap a few pieces operation - your best bet will be to find a disk brake equipped rear %26quot;axle%26quot; assembly from a similar car so you have all the pieces in one assembly then find a really good welder who you can persuade ($$$) to perform non dot approved modifications to your machine. If you are reasonable lucky on the parts locating side of this you might get it accomplished for less than 2 or 3 thousand dollars. How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?WHY would you want to do this? It would be very expensive for no benefit whatsoever.

    96 cavalier with bad brakes?

I have a 96 cavalier with a 2.2L. and I am having problems with the brakes! Every time I try to stop the rear brakes lock up and then the abs kicks in and the abs continues pumping till you stop. Note: It has drum brakes. I have already taken apart the rear brakes and checked them out all hardware is good, shoes are good, wheel cylinders are good, I.E. at least they are not leaking, I can't tell if they are frozen but I don't think so. I have also completely changed the brake fluid in it hoping this might help some how, but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

    Thanks!!

Please serious answers only. Thanks.96 cavalier with bad brakes?1 ABS and regular brakeing system r 2 differnt things

2 after replaceing 2 wheel sensors at 125 each...I pulled the ABS fuse and put tape on the ABS lite,,,,i learned driving before ABS was invented and think its an added expense to save idiot drivers

3 ABS computer cost a lot 300 to 1200 dollars96 cavalier with bad brakes?Ok this is straight out of my brakes class' shop manual.

    1. Failed master cylinder.

    2. Restricted brake lines preventing fluid to flow to front brakes(check your brake lines).

    3. Defective proportioning valve allowing excessive pressure to rear brakes.

    4. ABS fault

But again the most likely is a faulty proportioning valve on Drum brakes.96 cavalier with bad brakes?I have to go with Whoa D's answer. I'm thinking bad proportioning valve (or possibly another fault) is causing the rear wheels to lock up. When this happens your EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) is going to start seeing two different wheel speed signals coming from the wheel speed sensors. The rear wheel speed sensors will show a very low speed due to wheel lockup, and the front wheel speed sensors will still show close to actual vehicle speed. This would indicate to the EBCM that there is a wheel slip condition and trigger the EBCM to initiate an ABS stop and engage the ABS system. Just my .02, anyway.

How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?

I recently went to a car repair shop and these are the things that they want to do with my car... get new front and rear brakes, new front rotors, service front calipers and rear drums and bleed all system. But the price what he has quoted is expansive. $ 350 should be alright for the good breaking pad including the the labor cost. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?I would ask about the %26quot;service front calipers%26quot; part. Most new calipers are self adjusting and not serviceable. The days of rebuilding calipers are pretty much over with. Unless the caliper is frozen in the slides or leaking there isn't much to %26quot;service%26quot;. As far as the price goes I would say it sounds pretty fair. Probably about 2-2.5 hours of labor plus parts. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?that's not a bad price for a shop to be doing the work, but the price for parts is about half that, the rest is labor. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?Get another quote, but get it done quick or quit driving the car with bad brakes. Killing somebody because of money is just stupid. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?I Just did all that on a Nissan Altima this morning for $300 (reputable shop)

  • How to remove hub from drum brakes?

i have spent the majority of today trying to change the rear shoes on my wifes peuegot 306, but havent had much luck. the hub on the drivers side came off without a problem, but the one on on the passenger side seems a bit stiff. i have tried levering it out with a screw driver, banging it with a hammer, but still it wont budge, anyone have any adeas? How to remove hub from drum brakes?you have to back the brake shoes off from the drum, on the backside of the hub you will see 1 or 2 holes with rubber plugs in them, pull the plugs out and look in the hole and you will see a gear wheel with a rod riding on the gear, you have to push the rod out of the way and turn the gear upward and that will back the shoes away from the drum so the drum will come off.How to remove hub from drum brakes?sometimes they will put two screws towards the center of the drum. otherwise it's just stuck keep workin it make sure the e-brake isn't onHow to remove hub from drum brakes?Start by trying to spray some penetrating oil in around the studs to losen any rust bonds. good luckHow to remove hub from drum brakes?hi joe..i think whats happend is the drum itself has worn to a point where the shoesare behind the lip worn into the drum and its this thats holding it in place...2 heafty screwdrivers at 9 and 3 oclock should do it-your right to smack it with a hammer--force screwdrivers and smack at the same time[not forgetting to loosen the hand brake cabble off so the shoes can move back in]...once your ready to reasemble dont forget to remove the lip on the inside of the drum with a grinder...doesnt have to be neat..this will let you adjust the shoes up before the drum goes back on...the trick is to get the shoes to just touch the serface of the drum.[if not readjust and try again--once the drom is back in place it shouldnt move freely but have a slight drag].self adjusters somtimes dont work correctally and your left with spongy brakes...hope this helps.

    Changing brakes on a 1996 nissan 200sx?

This is the first time since I've owned this car that I'm changing the rear brakes on this car. They are drum, which involves the springs etc., how difficult is this job really going to be for me., what special tools might I need to get this job done before the workweek starts again.Changing brakes on a 1996 nissan 200sx?The drums are not too bad. Get a good pair of pliers or Vice grips to make this job easy.

I would recommend you go to youtube.com and watch someone do rear brakes. The hardest parts are putting the e-brake back on the new shoes. Since they have retaining ring clip. The second hard part is the springs. Vice grips works very well compared to using pliers or channel locking pliers.

Some people have a hard time doing this. But once you do it they are all about the same. Now some cars do not have springs but have this bent rod shaped like a horse shoe that pulls the shoes back to place and only have 2 springs with nail like piece and a twist lock cap.Changing brakes on a 1996 nissan 200sx?not so bad type into search box

My rear brake is not at all strong and there is alot of freeplay on the left lever. I have tightened the brake wire under the engine case to the fullest and there is no difference, so im assuming its the brake shoes worn out. (Its not a disc brake its a drum brake)

To change the brake shoes what will i need to do. Where could air be getting into brake system? Hardly, if any, rear braking.?

Okay, I have drum brakes in my 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass 5.7L 2bl. Ever since we got that car the brakes have been real iffy. Most recently, I decided to work on them. We changed one rear wheel cylinder about two months ago and two days ago I changed the other rear wheel cylinder. I'm still waiting to get the new spring set (that comes tomorrow) to put both sides back together. It has always been the rear drum brakes that seem to give the problems. We have taken the brakes to the shop many times and the longest any work has lasted has probably been 2 months until they went back to how they were. I believe the new wheel cylinder I just replaced was leaking but I'm not sure. We have also had a new master cylinder put in on one of the trips to the shop. What I'm wondering is how much more could be left to check out? The only thing left I can think of would be rear brake lines or power booster, but if the power booster went out I wouldn't have any brakes right? The front brakes seem to work fine, it's the rear drum brakes that don't seem to do much. What else could be left? Any tests I could perform? Here is a link to my photo album: http://photobucket.com/69olds

P.s.- Along with putting in new wheel cylinders, I'm putting in new springs on both sides and new self adjusters.Where could air be getting into brake system? Hardly, if any, rear braking.?Another 40 year old vehicle with the same old problem. Either the workmanship is defective and air hasn't been removed from the lines correctly or your brakes are boiling the fluid thus causing air pockets to form in the line/s. Since air is compressible, this is why the rear brakes feel spongy (the vague feeling). Save some cash and invest in a disc braked rear end. problem solved.

Can you post a pic of the whole car?Where could air be getting into brake system? Hardly, if any, rear braking.?Theres a couple things I can see immediately off the start. I own a 2007 Cobalt LS and it has rear drums, and I agree I haven't seen them do much of anything since I got the car, but as the commercial says, the front does about 70% of the work. If your front brakes work fine, chances are its something in the rear lines, air is a big thing especially with older systems, bleeding them the right way and the right order is critical to getting the air out.

Another thing could be the actual drum cover, where the pads rub against. If the drum cover is under spec minimums, the pads won't even touch the walls. You need a shop or a micromoter to tell you whether this is true or not though. I wouldn't be surprised though if they were too thin, it'd explain the lack of control in them since the beginning and consider the age of the car, it is a likely possibility.Where could air be getting into brake system? Hardly, if any, rear braking.?I would make sure the rears are adjusted properly. If the star adjusters are not set right after a brake job the shoes will not touch the drums.

Also ask the shop if they bench bled the master cylinder properly before they installed it. If the all of the air is not purged out of the master before the lines are attached, you will not be able to get all of the air out.

Good LuckWhere could air be getting into brake system? Hardly, if any, rear braking.?try bleeding your rear brake lines! and you do have brakes if the booster is out ,when the engine is running and you press the brake paddle if you hear a hissing sound could be booster!when ever you change cylinders you must bleed the system!Where could air be getting into brake system? Hardly, if any, rear braking.?It sounds like your adjusters are backing off ,change out the arm and auto adjuster cable and be sure when you adjust the shoes up that the arm catches the teeth on the adjuster .If not the shoes are backing off on you .

How do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum?

Hi, ive messed up. ive changed the wheel cylinder and shoes on the rear of my Renault 5 (1996). I did the nearside first, it was alittle tight getting the drum back on so i knocked it home with a hammer and went about doing the offside.

as i was putting the drum back on the offside, I backed off the adjuster and it occured to me that was why the nearside was tight to get on.

anyway, I tried putting the wheels back on, but the nearside rear wont turn as i drive. Now I cant get he damn Drum off to back off the adjuster.

Ive just spent an entire day trying to get it off but it just wont budge.

we're due to go on holiday in this car in approx 36 hours!

What on earth am i going to do?

How do i get the drum off? the handbrake is backed off, theres no pressure in the cylinder as ive disconnected the hose. It must be the adjuster pushing the shoes into the drum. Ive tried hammers, levers etc, but it just will not come off

Please, If you have any idea, help me.

Thank you in advanceHow do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum?oh, bad luck. right, whats happening is the retaining clips (which pull the shoes back, parrallel to the brake drum face) arent.

so, when you try to remove the drum, the shoes are jamming against the drum face. theres only two ways to remove this, 1 using levers on opposite sides of the drum, insert and lever forwards, and get you mate to bash the drum with a rubber or hide mallet whilst its under pressure.

    2. on some renaults theres a keyhole window behnd the backplate, you can insert a small flat bladed screwdriver and rotate teh adjusters so its in the off position... (down is off i think)

3 find a skip, cut along the A frame, and th B post, then itll fit into the skip and you wot have to worry about it anymore... #

seriously, phone renault and ask to speak to a mechanic. but ive had to do this many times, on many different cars, and as has already been suggested, its bloody hard work, and its almost always scraps the wheel drum.

this is what happens when unqualified folk start playing around trying to save a few quid... so how much is this going to cost to put right? and im sorry chap, but who are you trying to kill, yourself or some innocent guy on the other carriageway?

lets put it like this, brakes systems on cars are simple, they have to be, but, its just as easy to screw up, as it is to get it right. and you only get one chance to get it wrong... then it kills you.

so, dont think of saving pennies, think about the life you save, it may be yours... phone quickfit, or some other service and pay the bill. How do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum?have you tried heat around the adjuster that might workHow do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum? You'll just have to keep hitting it until it releases, theres not much else you can doHow do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum? You could try what this guy did - if you don't have access to the Haynes Manual which should show you how to get to the adjuster.....???How do i release a Renault 5 rear brake drum?no nice way of doing this, either borrow a slide hammer, or try putting the road wheel on with 2 bolts try waggling it again but failing that get a bolster chisel in from behind the drum (i know there is not much room) and batter it off.

be prepared for a new spring kit at the very least.

Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?

I changed the rear shoes, hubs, springs and all the little stuff on my wife's 1990 Nissan Stanza, I got the driver side drum on, but now cant get the passenger side on.....how the heck do i get it back on and is it supposed to take a hammer to knock it back on?Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?Is the brake adjuster spun all the way back in at the very bottom of the replacement shoes? There should be no free space between the tooth adjuster wheel and the body of the adjuster that slips over the base of the shoes .

Try switching brake shoes side to side. Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?Several possibilities.

First of all, did you totally release the adjustor?

Some cars have a star wheel on a threaded shaft; other have wedges, etc.

Second is that could the parking brake be hanging up?

    That should be totally loose.

Third is that the wheel cylinder could be sticking?

Make sure the piston turns easily and is not binding from rust.

Also make sure you did not turn the piston slot upside down, as they often are not flat, but slanted.

Also make sure the shoes are centered.

They can move up and down considerably.

You can have the ridge machined off the drum, but you should not have to.

It should fit because replacements should be no larger than the originals. Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?Noooo hammer! ... When you brake, the shoes wear down. But the drums wear down as well over time.

If these are the original drums there will be a ridge inside the drum on the leading edge. This is what stops the drum going back on.

The best way to remove this is in a lathe but failing that you can carefully use a grindstone in your drill

to remove most of it and the drum will just push on.

One point There is a maximum diameter for the drum which should not be exceeded. Usually if you wire brush them you will find the size stamped on it somewhere. Check this also as you may need new drums. Here in UK replacement drums are about 25 a pair roughly $40

Also check your handbrake adjuster. Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?no no no hammers, usually the self adjusters are all the way out by the time you put on new shoes, you need to set them back, and them adjust them out to specifications which should be in the repair manual.

drum brakes must be adjusted correctly, or else in a panic stop situation the car can lock one or more wheels and or pull to one side or the other, if you did not get a repair manual yet, go get one. it would have all the Information you need in itAre the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?did you run the adjuster all the way in? also there is a ridge on the inside edge of the drum sometimes will make it hard to get on. take the drums and have them turned down to get the edge off. don,t hammer them on or they will get stuck and the wheel won,t turn. do like i said and they will fit. try adjusting the adjuster in all the way.Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?No! There should be an adjusting screw spindle. I looks like a cowboys spur on the end of a tube. Pull the hold down tang away from the star wheel and turn the star wheel to bring the shoes closer together. Once it's on you make your preliminary adjust through the hole in the back(maybe the front) using a flat screwdriver or a brake spoon.

Good luck. Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?did you install them properly. the drum should slide right over. is the parking brake on. remember, brakes, when engaged, press out onto the inside of the drum. your parking brake %26quot;tighten's%26quot; the rear system. Are the rear Brake drums supposed to be extremely hard to get on?adjust it in some bump shoes with hand

should be little tight but not that you have to hit it

How to inspect/change a mopeds rear brake shoes?

The rear brake on my piaggio typhoon 125 is not as strong and there is alot of free play on the left brake lever. Im guessing it needs new brake shoes as it is a drum brake. I tried tightening the cable underneath the kick start casing but that doesnt seem to work.

Is there any sites to show how to change or inspect brake shoes or can someone tell me simply how to do it as im a newbie with typhoon bikes. How to inspect/change a mopeds rear brake shoes?contact me through my avatar..ive a site you can download a manual for free, but im not listing it on here. How to inspect/change a mopeds rear brake shoes?well really not much to them should be able to go buy new brake shoes or pads from dealer if you cant adjust it any more then good bet they gone jack it up and remove wheel or brakes pretty much it just take it apart and replace shoe and put it back like you remove itHow to inspect/change a mopeds rear brake shoes?Your best bet is to splash out and buy the piaggio/ haynes owners manual (about 20) for that particular model, as some information on the net may not be relevant to your bike. How to inspect/change a mopeds rear brake shoes? You have to remove the wheel to be able to remove the brake shoe carrier from the drum. You can then see the wear material on the shoes.

It may be that the cable has stretched and could need replacement.

There may be an adjuster on the end where it goes onto the lever on the brake drum ( at the wheel).

Some play is necessary - no play on a bike/scooter means that the brake can apply when going over a bump and some movement needs to happen firstly putting on the brake light switch just before applying the brake.

Whatever you do ensure proper operation of the brake light as a smack from the rear could have very serious consequences.

    Good luck

How do you remove the rear brake hubs on a 1989 Toyota Dyna 200 ?

I've changed the drum brakes on the front, the hub just comes off after removing wheels and 2 screws. The rear drum brakes have reached maximum adjustment and now are starting to jam on. I couldn't find a workshop manual for this vehicle and I don't want to start smacking it with the hammer and break something (probably my finger). The wheels are removed, the 6 retaining nuts are removed, do I need to use a puller or twist the bit in the centre? This is a single wheel set up, not dual wheels. Any mechanical advice much appreciated, Cheers Stu.How do you remove the rear brake hubs on a 1989 Toyota Dyna 200 ?sounds like you may have to hammer side to side and pry side to side a little at a time, I've been there many times.

Unless there is a way to access the adjuster gear from the back...some vehicles have a rubber thing that can be removed, just don't turn it tighter. How do you remove the rear brake hubs on a 1989 Toyota Dyna 200 ?Gonk or STP Injector cleaner %26quot;1 bottle to 3/4 tank of gas%26quot; or at a good station they have Pressurized cans of Injector cleaner they will use to clean the System faster.

You'll also need to turn the rotors and drums so there is no low or high spots. Some auto parts stores do this for free for buying the pads and shoes.

You'll need a micrometer to measure that there is enough metal on the rotors and brake drums. Again most auto parts stores can do this for free.

How do I change the rear brakes on my Vespa LX150?

Drum to disc brakes on 01 celica gt? how to do it?

I am wanting to change my drum brakes to disc in the rear of my 01 celica gt. any ideas on how to do this and do it cost effectively?Drum to disc brakes on 01 celica gt? how to do it?As the guy above said unless you are looking to race the car you shouldn't bother with that.

If you are persistent then search for 7th gen. celica forums and they'll have you covered.

Get braided stainless steel brake lines, slotted rotors (not cheap ones), and high end brake pads (EBC red stuff or Hawk HP+) or better, and your car will stop about 25 feet shorter than it does right now.

If you are able to do the labor yourself you are looking at $350 and up for that job. I can't give you a range on the high end because for all I know you could go out and get a big brake brembo kit and spend $2000 on brakes for the front end alone.Drum to disc brakes on 01 celica gt? how to do it?You really should just forget about this. The reality is that the front brakes do 70-80% of the braking and that is because the rear end is so light and under braking the weight transfers forward so there is almost no traction on the rear. If you put on stronger rear brakes you run the risk of locking the rear wheels and the car will swap ends in a heartbeat. You will get more %26quot;bang for your buck%26quot; if you upgrade the front brakes with top line pads and drilled/grooved discs.

How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?

i have a Ford Galaxy ( 07 ) diesel and i have got a grinding noise from the back right wheel.....i am just trying to find out how much the garage should charge me tomorrow for this?

Any ideas? How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?I don't think they have drums I think they have discs.

I would charge about 120 for rear back discs and pads but as the car is so new and the grinding is only coming from one wheel then it could be okay to just change the disc on that wheel (probably bring the bill down to 100).

This is just an estimate as it depends on the price of the parts.

At a garage you are probably looking about 170 - 200.

Email for more details if necessary.

    EDIT:

gav552001 - It is not always necessary to change in axle pairs as you are taught in main dealers. Upon inspection, If the good brake rotor is okay (not wore down too much %26amp; smooth) then why change it? People also have there discs reground sometimes on a machine to make it right and save money.

When I say that they would be okay to get one changed, I don't mean that, I mean after inspection. How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?500 but idkHow much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?phone around 3 or 4 garages to get an average figure of cost. Alternatively call or go into your local accessory shop and ask them how much the drum brakes will cost, from this you can work out each mechanics labour costs. How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed? If the noise is constant it might be a wheel bearing rather than brakes.

Autodata lists rear brake pads and discs at 1hr 50 minutes labour.

Rear Discs are about 27 Pads are 12 without sensors and 16 with.

Hope this helps. How much will i be to get my rear brakes ( Pads and Drums ) changed?Hi there please ignore the one who suggests changing only one side any mechanic/technician knows that with safety critical items such as brakes, steering and suspension you change them in axle pairs, anything else is asking for trouble, as for your noise then it could be a bearing but i wouldn't expect it on an 07 plate unless the mileage is very high, as for the cost that depends on if its manufacturers parts or pattern parts such as mintex or first line and also depends upon the garage you use, im afraid that you will have to ring around but please avoid the fast fit merchants, also again check they have replaced them as a pair by asking to see the originals

    Hope that helps

How to change rear brake pads and drums?

if you have not yet done so, investing in a haynes or clinton's manual for your specific car is a great investment. most auto parts stores carry them or you can search the internet under chiltons or haynes repair manual and the make/model of your car.

for drum brakes, chuck front wheels, loosen lug nuts both side, and jack up car. remove wheel.

the drum will have 2 machine screws holding the drum in place, remove them.

the drum should come off with a little tapping. make sure e brake is off.

you will see two shoes connected by springs and the brake cylinders. also the ebrake arrangement will be apparent.

see why the manual is handy now?

using screwdriver and pliers, dislodge the brake shoes from the cylinder to relief spring tension.

unhook the springs and remove shoes.

depending on the age of the vehicle, it may be a good time to consider replacing the cylinders.

replacement is the opposite of the above.

if the system is disc, same as above for removing the wheel.

the disc calipher will be held on to the car by a couple of bolts. remove to free calipher.

the pads can now be removed.

be sure to have either the drums or the disc resurfaced prior to re-assembly.

it is relatively easy to change either, doable for a shade tree mechanic with a manual.

many autoparts stores offer free turning with purchase of pads or shoes. buy quality pads or shoes. keep everything clean. use brake cleaner before installing brake components.

depending on manufacturer of pads/shoes there will be a short break in period. How to change rear brake pads and drums?you need to be more clear on your question. How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?

i was not able to take the rear drum off...is there any trick to it...what are the steps in changing out the shoes? How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?Yes there is a trick or several tricks.

First with the em.brake off and the car in Neutral.Take off the tire, using a large hammer smack the drum in between the lug studs several times, this works 99% of the time. Then tap on the back of the drum,be sure not to hit the backing plate and bending it.put both hands on the drum across from each other moving side to side pulling on the drum.It should come off.You must have some brake tools to remove the shoes. You buy these tool at a car parts place where you buy the brake shoes. They can show you what you need. They are not that costly.A repair manual can also be of help and you can buy that there also.Do one side first leave the other side on in case you don't remember how the shoes go on.There is a primary shoe and a secondary shoe just compare them before you remove them. One shoe is longer than the other one. That is another reason not to take both sides off you can always go look at the other side. You should take both rear drums with you and have them turned at the auto parts place.Mark the drums L and R so they go back on the same side they came off of.If you do not have them turned you may experience a pulsation when braking when finished.Check for leaks (fluid)at the brake wheel cylinders,if you have one you must rebuild them or replace them.

I would for sure get a repair book. You can get a Haynes or others that are cheap. How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry?if you look at the drum, there are two little threaded holes on the face of the drum, get 2 long bolts and screw them in there evenly. Once they touch the bottom, turn them a couple of turns each. This will 'press' the drum off the shoes/hub assembly. I don't know what the thread pitch is on Toyota's, you'll prob. just have to take a look and get a few at the hardware store.

once you get the drum off, take a picture of the brake assembly, digital would be great. this will help you when you reassemble. How to change rear brake shoes on a 1998 camry? These folks have covered what to do if the drum is frozen on with rust, but there may be another problem. The drums may be worn down so there is a groove the shoes are riding in now. This makes the diameter of the outside of the shoes bigger than the diameter of the drum edge. You can pound all you want, but if this is the case, you won't pass that smaller diameter over a larger one.

There is a slot in the back of the brake housing. It should have a rubber plug on it. Remove it and you will see an adjustment ring with teeth on it.

You will have to turn this ring to bring the shoes closer together. I'm not sure which way to turn the ring, but you'll find out. It should turn easier when you are moving them close together.

Converting drum brakes to disc brakes?

is it possible to change the rear drum brakes on a 2wd 94 chevy suburban to big disk brakes? if it is how much would it cost on average?Converting drum brakes to disc brakes?yes its possible. as for cost heres what you need to consider.... first, do you wanna do it as a kit? or just swap the axle with another GM product like say a trans am axle that already has disk brakes. cost is hard to nail down here because there is alot involved. you will need to change more than just the brakes. ie: master cyclinder piston, brake distribution manifold block, parking brake, and does your truck have any kinda anti lock devices? ( hope not, those suck no matter what anyone says! ). generally the kit ( if avail for your truck ) would be the easier way to go as it will contain all that you need for a set price. please take the time to research this among the aftermarket suppliers. this research will also give you an idea of the work involved to do the project. curious to know why you would want to do this as the rear brakes only provide 30% of your braking. i could see it on a performance vehicle. if you use this truck for hauling, ponder using trailer brakes. much easier project than what your after now.

    Change brakes?

i change my front brakes every30-35k, how often will i be needing to change my rear drum brakes on a 4x2 truck.Change brakes? The rear drum brakes last about twice as long.Change brakes?i dont change mine i just tighten them. they should be good for 100k as long as you tighten them.Change brakes?I have never changed or tightened rear brakes on any vehicle. 70% of your braking power comes from the front brakes, so rear brakes only need to be changed if they are completely worn out.Change brakes? When you change the front brakes, inspect the rear brakes as well for wear and cracks on the drum. Most of your stopping ability is provided by the front breaks so the rears do not get as much wear. BTW Drum brakes auto adjust by themselves.Change brakes?never trust the auto adjusters, yup shoes do usually last twice as long as front pads, and it wouldn't hurt to re-adjust them every 20,000 km it's not hard to do, you should notice your brake peddle feel better when the rear shoes are adjusted not to mention the vehicle will stop better, good luck.

the same as the front disc brakes with the exception of the parking brake spring. I can't remember if this is actually in the way of the pads or not, but if you use a brake spring remover tool it comes off easily.

Loosen the parking hand brake (inside the vehicle). Jack the vehicle up and put on supports. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels. Remove the bottom caliper guide pin from the back of the caliper. Remove the pin (leave the grease on the pin). Swing the caliper up and tie off the caliper out of the way with wire or string **DO NOT LET THE CALIPER HANG FROM THE BRAKE LINE**. If you have trouble loosening the guide pins, get a socket wrench with a longer handle for more torque.

Remove the outer shim, old brake pads and spring clips. Check the clips for damage, replace as necessary. You will now use a driver tool (MB990652)to thread the piston into the caliper. Position your driver bore over the caliper piston (the metal ring on the part you tied up) and tighten slowly as to depress this metal ring back into the caliper. Use caution and insure you are even on all sides. You will want to depress it all the way back in until it's flush with the caliper.

Now you're ready for the new pads! Put the shims (thin metal parts) back onto the new brake pads. Insert your new brake pads into those metal clips and position them against the rotor on both the front and back. Now, untie the caliper (the part you tied off earlier) and slip it back down onto the new pads. It might be a bit snug so make sure your pads are all the way in and flush with the rotors. Lubricate and re-insert the caliper guide pin back into the bottom hole. Make sure you reposition the rubber part (sleeve) that's back there as well. The guide pin needs to go through that component. Using your spring remover, put your parking brake spring back on. Put your wheels back on and your lugs (install lugs in a star fashion, never one right after the other). Remove supports and put the vehicle back down.

Start your engine and depress the brake until it is firm. You're ready to go!How do i change the rear brakes on a 1996 eagl etalon?Try tapping in between the wheel studs with a hammer to pop the drum loose from the hub. When the drum has some play try to jiggle it off. If the drum has some play, but won't come off, then you need to back off on the adjuster (there is a small window on the back plate that is usually covered by a rubber cap). Pull the cap off and use a small flathead screwdriver to back off the adjuster. Just remember that the adjuster has left-handed threads, so you have to spin the adjuster clockwise to loosen it.

How hard is it to change the rear brakes on a ford laser?

    Hi,

Just wondering how hard it is to change the breaks on a ford laser. I think that they are drum brakes. Someone said it wasn't very difficult.

Thanks to everyone in advanceHow hard is it to change the rear brakes on a ford laser?corset thanks

    never done a laser

    done sierra, escort ect

    its not simple

but i would say if you take a pic, before you start removing the springs, and your a smart lady :) - you will be able to get it back, just remember they are adjustable, so if they dont fit back in, move the little moon shaped bit/cam with the teeth on to its other extremity....

front are easier, as long as you have the right tool, which might be a 9ml hex, which im guessing you wont have, non standard size, cant remmember if u need for back

when doing front remember to compress the POT before you refit. this means get the cup bit with the tube on, and squeeze it with all your might, might have to stand on it if ure little.... its a cup within a cup, kind thing, break fluid between the cups.. :)How hard is it to change the rear brakes on a ford laser?Go here and fill out the make, model and year. Then decide for yourself. If you have a good jack and the proper tools, it isn't that hard to do. You may have to take the drums to a shop and have them turned, but that shouldn't cost much. You can usually find out about turning the drums from the place you buy the linings.

How can you get the rear drum off of a 2001 ford taurus to change the brakes?? the drum will not come off?

A rust ridge has formed inside the drum causing it to catch on the shoes. If you can adjust the brakes from the backside of the backing plate (sometimes access is limited) adjust the rear brakes inward. If no access to adjuster, try turning (twisting) the drum as you try to pull it off, or get behind the drum with 2 pry bars and try %26quot;walking%26quot; it off. My lancer has drum brakes in the back. Not really sure if they are strong enough to stop the car once I get all the power added that I'm planning. I honestly assume they won't, but I read in articles where drum brakes are just fine, and others that say I should convert them. How do you change rear brakes on a crf 100. It has a drum brake not a disk and i can't find anywhere that says or shows how to do it. Can someone give me a link or explain how to?thanksHow do you change rear brakes? You need your bike on some kind of stand or crate to get the rear wheel off the ground. I don't know about your bike specifically but from my experience here's what I'll give you. First, you need to remove the nut that holds the foot brake shaft to the lever on the drum brake itself. Then you remove the codder pin and nut that attaches the torque arm (rod that runs from the swingarm to the drum brake) and let that hang off the swingarm. Then loosen and remove the rear axle, push the tire forward and remove the chain from the sprocket and pull the tire away from the bike. Put down 2 wooden blocks so you can lay the tire sprocket side down on them without having the sprocket on the ground. Now you should be able to pull the drum assembly out of the hub and further disassemble from there.

For reassembly simply reverse the order. Good luck! How do you change rear brakes? You would need a new wheel, brake caliper, master cylinder, brake lever and swingarm. Forget itHow do you change rear brakes?Spend the money for a good manual and you won't be sorry.

When I did a repair on an older Honda with no available manual, I took a bunch of digital pictures as I took it apart and made sure it looked the same (but cleaner and properly lubed and adjusted) when it went back together.

I have had many bikes and cars apart over the years though, so I have a pretty good idea how things are supposed to look and go back together. Even then, I spent a lot of time trying to find a source of the actual procedures because a little guess-work at the wrong time can cost you lots of time and money.

If you really don't want to get a manual, go see if you can get one of the guys at a local dealer to talk you through the steps and let you know if there is anything to watch out for. Most of those guys are fellow riders who will take time out to help another rider out. It never hurts to ask.

Good luck. How do you change rear brakes?I don't

Go to a brake shop they usually give free estimates, shop around. Is it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?Since the car you're discussing is already fitted with drum brakes I don't know that there is anything to gain.

The rear brakes actually do a small percentage of the stopping, (30 to 40%) making the effectiveness of the rear brakes a small matter.

Disc brakes are preferred over drum brakes because they are less effected by heat; the rotor has a great deal of air flow over it as do the friction pads. The rear brakes don't get heated up nearly as much as the front which is why most manufacturers just go with the lighter weight drum brake in the rear.Is it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?it is not usually worth the cost for most cars driven on the street in a law abiding fashion ,if you are racing and a different year of car that is almost identical to yours has them an upgrade may be possible for a reasonable cost by switching the parts from the newer or sportier version of your carIs it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake? Not really. The front brakes do most of the work anyhow.

Maybe if you were driving a truck with a heavy payload in the back.
