2) My brakes also vibrate a bit (pedal) when at higher speeds. He said this is caused by the rear drum brakes being out of line or uneven or something - He can machine/adjust those for about $90. Is that necessary and/or reasonable?

I have a 99 Mazda protege and live in Denver CO , and drive about the avg amount i'd say.

The vibration is more likely your front discs being warped. If they will machine both the front rotors (discs) and the rear drums for $90, that's not too bad. For just the rear drums it may be a little high.
Brake pads (front wear much more) should last at least 20,000 miles, and perhaps as much as 60,000. The squealing sound doesn't always mean that your brakepads are wearing down. That sound can come from brake dust, heat, or even rust on the rotor. In many cases when the pad wears down to the point where it's just metal on metal contact you'll get a squealing sound, but not if there's any pad left.
After working for some time with mechanics, I can very safely tell you that there are a good 80% who are trying to rip you off. Take your car somewhere else and get the job done there.

95 Pontiac Grand Am Brakes. HELP!?
I need to change the rear brakes in my 95 pontiac grand am, I need to know how much of a pain it is to change the shoes and drums? Is there any special thing that need to be dune or is it a simple as the pads and shoes were on the front?95 Pontiac Grand Am Brakes. HELP!?Do you have 4 wheel disc or rear drum brakes? Do only one side at a time so you can use the opposite side as a reference in case you forget how something was installed.
It's not a hard job, but you will need to get the right tools.

Corolla spongy brakes?
i just changed the front disc brake pads and rotors on my 2000 corolla and the mechanic said the rear drums still have 45% left on them so i didn't have the rear changed. I'm not exactly sure if this problem was present before the brake change or not but i noticed that my brake is really spongy and i have to press it about 90% down to get a good brake response and after 90% it is really stiff and makes it hard for me to judge how hard i am braking before locking the wheels. This is important cause my car lacks ABS. I have heard that changing the brake fluid and bleeding the lines helps my brakes be more sharper and less spongy but my receipt from the brake job indicates that they did change the brake fluid and did bleed the lines!? so im wondering whether i should take it to toyota instead and ask them to bleed the line and change the brake fluid or just to ask them to inspect the brakes? i know there is a 80$ diagnostic charge if no problem is found and im wondering whether i should risk it?Corolla spongy brakes?just drive it it will get betterCorolla spongy brakes?whoever changed your brake pads and rotors must have not followed the proper procedure to bleed brakes. How to convert 4 lugs to 5lugs on honda civic ex 05 coupe?
I have a honda civic 05ex coupe and I want to convert 4 lugs pattern to 5 lugs pattern. I don't know what parts should i get to do it, and I also want to change the front rotor brakes and rear brake ( my rear brakes are drum and I want to convert it into brake rotor). Can you guys help me out with this?

For non drive wheels you can change hubs, -- but you need to find one at junkyard (preferably) that has disc brakes on back and buy all the stuff needed to remove drum brakes and backing plates and install lines that go with disc brakes! Then you have problem of parking brake, which has to have all the conversion stuff to to work!
When you get finished with that, all you have to do is get master cylinder for disc brakes, (for all 4 wheels), change anti skid brake parts (if so equipped) and possibly %26quot;shuttle valve that shuts off fluid flow should one %26quot;end %26quot; of car have brake leak, and then I guess you are ready to go!
Possibly you can buy conversion kit for disc brakes at a%26quot;speed shop/custom car supply%26quot; place for somewhere around $900-1000! 96 cavalier with bad brakes?
I have a 96 cavalier with a 2.2L. and I am having problems with the brakes! Every time I try to stop the rear brakes lock up and then the abs kicks in and the abs continues pumping till you stop. Note: It has drum brakes. I have already taken apart the rear brakes and checked them out all hardware is good, shoes are good, wheel cylinders are good, I.E. at least they are not leaking, I can't tell if they are frozen but I don't think so. I have also completely changed the brake fluid in it hoping this might help some how, but no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

2. Restricted brake lines preventing fluid to flow to front brakes(check your brake lines).
3. Defective proportioning valve allowing excessive pressure to rear brakes.
4. ABS fault

I'm thinking bad proportioning valve (or possibly another fault) is causing the rear wheels to lock up. When this happens your EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) is going to start seeing two different wheel speed signals coming from the wheel speed sensors. The rear wheel speed sensors will show a very low speed due to wheel lockup, and the front wheel speed sensors will still show close to actual vehicle speed. This would indicate to the EBCM that there is a wheel slip condition and trigger the EBCM to initiate an ABS stop and engage the ABS system. Just my .02, anyway.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
I recently went to a car repair shop and these are the things that they want to do with my car... get new front and rear brakes, new front rotors, service front calipers and rear drums and bleed all system. The mechanic gave me an estimate of $454 including labor and parts. Is that a good deal or does that cost too much? Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?
My automatic 150cc scooter has levers for front and rear (disk) brakes, and both are VERY tight with almost no give. Can this be adjusted? I've read through many manuals and researched, but everything talks about how to change the pads (or about how to adjust drum brakes) and things like that and not if the levers can be adjusted.
